An introductory trip to Mexico City, however, no tests or quizzes! Just the opportunity to experience one of the world's largest capital cities. We will explore the early Aztec founding of the City of Tenochtitlan, learn of the brief occupation by the Hapsburg's, the colonization by the Spanish, and finally, the fight for Independence, which lasted from 1810 to 1821. We will explore the Historic Center, including the zocalo, which is the 2nd largest public square after the Red Square in Moscow.

A study of the historic roots of the Social Realist School of art in Mexico. Beginning with the innovators, Jose Posada Guadalupe and Dr. Atl, we will learn about the artists who gave birth to this movement, and the social/political forces that fueled it. Diego Rivera's activities in Mexico, San Fransisco, New York and Detroit will be reviewed, as well as on-site visits to his most important works in Mexico City, Chapingo and Cuernavaca. We will also study and visit the works of Juan O'Gorman, Jose Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Rufino Tamayo.
